authorCherri  good evening all
genealogyADM Welcome Cherri - Thank you for being here with us tonight!
daisy2  hello Cherri, glad to meet you
authorCherri nice to meet all of you
genaddict  Hi Cherri
authorCherri I'd like to know how many here have been researching traditional methods and via the Internet
genealogyADM  daisy - feel free to take as many notes as you want, but
- don't be shy about asking questions!
daisy2 thx;, ADM
daisy2 I have, cherri
authorCherri traditional and Internet?
genealogyADM> I have - both ways ;-)
genealogyADM  <grin>
daisy2 yes, just started internet, am not very good at it tho, lol
genaddict  I'm new to the internet
............................ Ally  joined.............
genealogyADM  Hi Ally :-)
daisy2 hi Ally
authorCherri what kinds of problems have you encountered researching via the Internet?
daisy2 not knowing if some of the costs are worth it or not
genaddict I explore so many sites that I can't remember where I have
- been
daisy2 my membership in ancestry.com has been worth it, tho
daisy2  that to, gen!
genaddict I just click from site to site and get so lost in all of the
- information
authorCherri
I have never paid for information -- except in the case of the Social Security Death Index records.
daisy2 I hope you will recommend soft wear for me to start entering my
- info into my computer
authorCherri The wealth of information is overwhelming and I think most people find it difficult to go from link to link and find nothing.
daisy2 ys, that for me also
Ally Ancestral Quest is a good genealogy program to use.
authorCherri I tell the students in my classes to try the trial versions of software that are free on the Net.
genaddict me too! and when i do find something, i don't always know if
- its my family
genealogyADM  That's great advice Cherri!
daisy2  ty, cherri, have started my notes, lol
genealogyADM > Most of the software programs offer free trial versions so
- that you can test them out for yourself
Ally  http://ancestralquest.com has a demo version you can download.
authorCherri Then they can decide. Many programs are formatted the same. It's kind of like whether you prefer to drive a Chevy or a Ford;-)
daisy2 ic
authorCherri The one thing to consider also is the size of the program
authorCherri For instance, The Master Genealogist is a great program...but VERY big. It does take quite a bit of hard drive.
daisy2 what I need is one that is very simple, very cheap, and they send an expert out to get m;e started!@ jk
authorCherri LOL
genealogyADM The Master Genealogist can also take a while to learn :-)
authorCherri Your basic Family Tree Maker is inexpensive and easy to use.
daisy2 I'm too old for that one...don't have the time
daisy2 I heard about F Tree Maker, but wanted to here more about it, do they have a trial?
daisy2 hear
authorCherri Although I'm not in the business of endorsing any products, Family Tree Maker is one of the easier, user-friendly programs.
daisy2 ok, thats 2 on my list now
authorCherri yes, to the free trial -- Just go to their Web site.
authorCherri My book does have a list of free programs on the Net for free use.
Ally AQ is very easy and inexpensive too.
genealogyADM http://www.familytreemaker.com/ftmvers.html
genealogyADM That's the page for the free trial version of Family Tree Maker
authorCherri Be aware that most trial programs will only hold 20-50 names, you will still need the full version.
Ally I use AQ to help create my web page .
authorCherri Family Tree Maker will also help create Web pages.
genealogyADM Cherri's book is a great resource for beginners, by the way :-)
authorCherri Thanks.
daisy2 got it
genealogyADM Your most welcome
authorCherri Daisy2, did you buy the book?
daisy2 meant got url, cherri, is your book offered on Amaazon?
Ally Where can you get a copy and how much?
daisy2 no not yet, but sure am interested
genealogyADM If you want to learn a little more about the software programs available and get links to their Web sites, read reviews, etc you can find them on my Web site at:
authorCherri You can request it at Barnes and Noble, Waldenbooks, Amazon, Borders.
genealogyADM http://genealogy.about.com/msubsoftware.htm
authorCherri The book is $24.95 retail and I believe $19.95 on the Net.
daisy2 ok...got quite a list already, lol
daisy2 title is?
authorCherri Let me tell you that this book is unlike any you have seen on the subject. It is a very basic book that not only instructs you on how to use the Internet, but EXACTLY where to begin your research.
genealogyADM Hey, everyone...I'm saving a transcript of this chat to put on my Web site...so you don't have to take too many notes :-)
authorCherri Genealogy Basics Online
daisy2 oh, good, ADM thx
authorCherri What kind of results have you had while searching the Net?
genealogyADM I know it's hard to keep up with a chat and write at the same time!
authorCherri found anyone?
genaddict I've found some second cousins, etc
daisy2 I put a couple queries on boards, and have found "cousins", one of them with a lot of info I needed, and very happy about both
authorCherri what sites?
genaddict genforum
genaddict familytreemaker
authorCherri I assume you use the surname boards at Rootsweb too?
............................ April2 joined.............
daisy2 was afreaid you'd ask that...as gen said, I, too, forget where I have been
genealogyADM Hi April :-)
daisy2 one was the site for the Isle of Man
Ally hi april
authorCherri One thing that I touch on in the classes is how to narrow your search on Family Tree Maker.
daisy2 hi April
genaddict I get lost on rootsweb
authorCherri hi April
April2 Hi everybode - I'm late
genaddict hello April
authorCherri Here's a little tip.
daisy2 ok
genealogyADM Actually, you aren't late April - chat tonight was moved to 9:30 because of our special guest :-)
authorCherri when you're on Family Tree Maker, click the Help button next to the search box
genaddict I like tips!
April2 Glad I didn't miss anything
authorCherri This will take you to a page of places that the search engine will search.
genealogyADM I'm also saving a transcript April
daisy2 ok
authorCherri You will want to UNCHECK every box except
authorCherri the ones that search Message Boards, Home Pages, and the Internet
authorCherri This way when you enter a name you are only searching the FREE sources.
daisy2 ic
authorCherri Otherwise you are searching all of their CD roms
............................ Greyman joined.............
authorCherri And as you already know, there's a cost for the information on the CD roms
Ally hi greyman
April2 Hi Greyman
genealogyADM Hi Greyman :-)
authorCherri In my area, there is a genealogy library which uses their patron donations to purchase the CD roms and you can use them for free.
daisy2 hi Greyman
genaddict Hello greyman
authorCherri If you have a genealogy society, this would be a great way to use the donations
authorCherri I have used the CD roms, but never paid for them.
Greyman Type HERESh... I'm incognito tonight
Greyman Hi all
daisy2 lol @ Greyman
April2 That soiunds like a good idea. The CD's are expensive and can't always find what you're looking for
authorCherri Try searching Family Tree Maker this way and you will be surpised at the results.
authorCherri I don't want to ramble on about one thing, but I'll be happy to answer any other questions.
April2 Is this using any Family Tree Maker software?
authorCherri I'm not sure I understand your question.
authorCherri Do you mean to search from their site?
April2 I came in late - I'm sorry - you were talking about searching on the Family Tree Maker
genealogyADM On the Web site April
April2 Are you talking about their site or the Family Tree Maker software?
authorCherri Yes, read the transcript later and you can follow the instructions to narrow your Family Tree Maker search.
April2 Gotcha
authorCherri From the site.
April2 I haven't had much luck this week except for the film I ordered from the LDS
authorCherri Have you searched the Family Search site?
genaddict I have
daisy2 not yet
authorCherri did you have any luck?
genaddict It's even more confusing than some of the rest
genaddict I find names but I don't know what they mean
genaddict A lot of the information conflicts with what I already know to be true
daisy2 the time I was there, I couldn't "navigate" it very well, so haven't vbeen back
authorCherri What you need to do is to type in one or two names.
April2 Do you know if there is anywhere you can search NYS vitakl records except for thefew census records. They will not honor written requests for records now - have to go there in person
............................ connie joined.............
authorCherri I find that the more information that you type in the less "hits" you receive.
daisy2 hi connie
authorCherri Have you tried going to their archives through the state page?
genealogyADM Hi Connie :-)
April2 Hi connie
authorCherri hi Connie
genaddict Hello connie
connie Hi, all!
Ally hi connie
April2 I don't think I've visited the archives - do they have searchable databases?
authorCherri If you can't find NYS records I would start searching through U.S. GenWeb at the state and county level.
genealogyADM Connie - I am saving a transcript of this chat to put on my Web page later, so you haven't missed anything!
connie Thanks! Good Idea!
authorCherri Every state is different, but many do have searchable databases.
April2 I tried GenWeb, but unfortunately at thios time there is no one listed for the county I want
April2 Thanks - I'll try it. Maybe you can help with another problem
authorCherri what's that?
April2 I'm trying to find out where ALIOE, ny IS . iT WAS LISTED IN A WILL OF My GGGF and must be an old name of a town, can"t find it anywhere
authorCherri There is the Tiger Map Server and I don't have the address off the top of my head, but I'll be happy to get the address the the moderator to share with you.
April2 I tried the maps and Geographical sites, but no luck. It was supposed to be in the Albbany area. I've e-mailed all over the state and no luck in locating it
authorCherri It can pinpoint many locations and tell you what state/county a town is/was in.
daisy2 .
April2 'If I could find the town, I could look in the census for that area and get more information
authorCherri I'll will find that address for you.
daisy2 I had that prob. and wrote the County Gen. Soc. and they were able to pinpoint the town, and tell me the new name for it, since it had moved a little ways away
April2 Thanks
authorCherri Let me share another little tip from the book. When you mentioned census records, I thought of it.
April2 Can I get Gen soc. addresses on the net
authorCherri Many people aren't aware of the "Find" function in their Web browser.
daisy2 I think so
Greyman Thanks for letting me listen in! Night y'all
daisy2 bye, Greyman
April2 Bye
Ally bye
connie bye
daisy2 who was that massked man? lol
April2 I still have so much to learn about the computer - tell us about the
authorCherri When you are searching lists of records like census or ship lists, you can search by clicking Edit/Find and typing in the word you are looking for.
connie Cherri, tell me more @ "Find" function and what it does.
connie That would save me so much time!
genealogyADM bye Greyman :-)
authorCherri The Web page may have 2000 unalphabetized names on it; and when you click on Edit and then Find (in page), a box will come up.
April2 I love shortcuts
............................ Greyman left.............
authorCherri You just type in the name (just the first name or surname) and click you are at the name.
authorCherri Have any of you tried this? It's great and saves a lot of eye strain.
connie Learn something new every day!
daisy2 no, thx for tip
Ally i haven't tried it..but will have to try it.
genealogyADM I use it practically every day - but I never thought to suggest it to other people!
genealogyADM Great tip, Cherri :-)
daisy2 I give too much info, and that sometimes misses just what I want
authorCherri When I teach my classes, this is everyone's favorite tip:-)
connie I will definitely try it next time out.
April2 Can't wait to try it
authorCherri I love searching through census records this way. You can go through many records in a click.
genealogyADM Just wish it worked with film readers LOL!
connie Cherri, any tips on finding native american ancestors who didn't claim to be that?
genealogyADM tough one Connie!
authorCherri There is a special forum at GenForum for Native Americans
connie Tell me about it1;)
connie Been there, no luck.
authorCherri I need to check, but I think it's under speical topics
authorCherri Other than that and a few site, I have to agree that there's little information out there.
connie The only info I have on my ggrandmother is her name on a marriage license and a birthdate.
connie My family has searched for her for several years, and cannot make a link anywhere.
authorCherri When all else fails, I always go back to Genforum. There's not better way to find someone than to connect with other researchers looking for the same person.
genealogyADM Have you tried the Native American resources listed on my Web site, Connie?
connie True. Yes, ADM some of them. Still looking.
genaddict I like genforum
daisy2 .
connie My favorite, too. Any other favorites I might not have tried?
authorCherri good luck, Native Americans are the toughest records to find.
connie Thanks, Cherri
genaddict But I forget which boards I have posted queries too. Is there a good way to organize internet research - like a online research log?
authorCherri I set up folders in my bookmarks. Each folder is labeled with a family surname.
connie Good Idea!
authorCherri When I find a page I want to refer to, I bookmark it and them shift it to a folder.
authorCherri I even have a folder labeled Genealogy that they are all in:-)
genealogyADM Ally - you are awfully quiet tonight :-)
Ally Is there a way to print this information out in case of a hard drive crash and you loose all those addresses?
genealogyADM Spoke too soon <g>
authorCherri I print out a lot of info
Ally i'm here...:-)
............................ April joined.............
authorCherri I look at it this way...
genaddict How do you print out bookmarks?
connie Hi, April
daisy2 hi other April
authorCherri when you print out the information, you are also creating a source for documentation.
............................ April left.............
............................ April joined.............
authorCherri oops, I thought you meant the site.
connie April, looks like the gremlins are at it again.
connie ;)
authorCherri I click into the address/location field of my Web browser and copy the address, then I paste it into a Word document.

Bev Type HEREhello - great guess I missed first part
Bev what was the subject/topic
genealogyADM Bev - I am saving a transcript of the chat which I will put up on my Web site
Bev web site address?
genealogyADM We have a special guest - Cherri is the author of Genealogy Basics Online
authorCherri I'm leafing through my book and trying to decide what tips or sites might be of interest to you and I found another site to discuss.
genealogyADM http://genealogy.about.com
April We're all ears
authorCherri Has anyone here been to the American Civil War Database?
genaddict I'm making a list
daisy2 no, but have done a lot of Civil War researaach thru the govt
authorCherri It's at www.civilwardata.com
daisy2 spelling, 0
authorCherri Most people don't try this site because they see it's a pay site but...
genealogyADM Me - but I guess I don't count ;-)
authorCherri as I've already mentioned I don't pay for information
authorCherri genealogyADM, what do you think of the site? :-)
connie I agree with your philosophy, Cherri.
April How do you get around that?
genealogyADM I like the fact that you can search on possibilities - without having to pay anything.
authorCherri On the home page there is a demonstration area
............................ connie left.............
authorCherri When you get there, you will click on Personell or Officer
authorCherri The results will give you...
authorCherri First, Middle, Last name...Residence, State, Occupation, Enlisted Rank, Enlisted Age, and Enlistment Date
genealogyADM I have several ancestors who I found listed...and then I requested their records through the usual channels
daisy2 I can't wait! gonna go start now....thanks cherri and ADM....hurry with the transcript!
............................ daisy2 left.............
April Do you know where you can search the ship lists for St. John New Brunswick? I've tried many of the popular sites, but most are US or Quebec.
............................ kath joined.............
April Hi kath
genealogyADM Hi Kath :-)
genaddict hello kath
............................ gil joined.............
authorCherri There are many ship lists on The Olive Tree Genealogy
kath Type HEREhello
authorCherri Have you heard of it? It's now through RootsWeb
Ally hi kath, hi gil
April Tried them and can't find the one I want.
genealogyADM Hi Gil :-)
kath i am new to the geneology world and can't believe how much there is to learn!
genaddict hello gil
April I understand many of the canadian records were not kept until after 1860 or so, but keep hoping I'ss stumble on it somewhere
authorCherri For a newbie to genealogy and the Internet, I would recommend U.S. GenWeb and Genforum
genealogyADM Kath and Gil - I am saving a transcript of this chat and I will have it posted on my Web site later tonight so that you can see what you missed!
kath my mother has been involved and has led me in the direction of research
authorCherri April, have you tried World GenWeb?
April kath - say goodbye to your life as you now know it - this is very addicting
genealogyADM Very, very addicting ;-)
kath i have been to ancestory.com and myfamily.com
kath i know i see april
genealogyADM They are both owned by the same company - Kath!
Ally and fun!!!
April No, is this where others have submitted info or something you can search?
kath oh see how much i know!
Bev Have to go - will look for the transcript and thanks.
authorCherri Thanks Bev
genealogyADM Most people don't realize that Kath - and they do have different information available
genealogyADM Goodnight Bev :-)
............................ Bev left.............
authorCherri My book outlines the top seven or eight sites to begin searching and also tells you how to search.
............................ Bill joined.............
genealogyADM Hi Bill :-)
authorCherri hi Bill
genaddict hello bill
Bill Type HEREHi
April Hi bill
Ally hi bill
Bill Hi all
April Can you get your book on the Gen.about.com site
genealogyADM Have you ever used the USGenWeb sites, April?
gil Type HERE Hi, this is my first time here but I'm addicted to genealogy too.
authorCherri Does or has anyone here used the Social Security Death Index?
April I've tried the GenWeb site but not sure I got all I could out of it
gil I've used it quite often with fairly good results
genealogyADM http://genealogy.about.com/library/blchat.htm
April I've used the SSDI but couldn't find the relatives I was searching foir
Bill I've used the SSDI a couple of times
genealogyADM Here is a link to information on Cherri's book
genealogyADM The World GenWeb site that Cherri mentioned is the International version of USGenWeb
genealogyADM Many of the countries don't have a lot of information yet, but others are a treasure trove of resources
April Couldn't find the naturalization papers at the local courthouse, searched a canadian site for military info and found that he was in canada later than I thought - he may never have been a citizen
authorCherri It's only a matter of time before the information will be on the net
authorCherri April, how old is the information you are looking for?
genealogyADM Before what information is on the Net, Cherri?
April He died here in the states in 1943
authorCherri Through many of the GenWeb sites and state archives sites mentioned in my book you can access
April He worked for the railroad - isn't there something about railroad employees that they didn't receive soc sec, but a railroad pension
............................ Bill left.............
authorCherri birth certificates, death records, census records, marriage, etc...
April Is there anyplace on the net I can search out railroad employee info
authorCherri re: railroad, yes.
April where
authorCherri forgive me but I'm trying to recall the site, Any help genealogy ADM?
genealogyADM On the railroad site?
genealogyADM I'll check real quick and get back to you!
authorCherri I believe that you can find some of it under the topics at GenForum and I also believe RootsWeb have railroad information>
authorCherri tx
authorCherri I'll share another site with you that you may or may not have heard of...it's called the U.S. Surname Distribution Map.
genealogyADM But the reason that you can't find information on him in SSDI, April, is that people who died before 1962 (when the records were computerized) do not appear in the database.
authorCherri Doesn't it depend on where you're looking? I think Ancestry has the most up-to-date records on SSDI.
April That explains it - I thought maybe he was never naturalized
authorCherri I do think Ancestry has the railroad records too.
genealogyADM http://www.rrb.gov/index.html
genealogyADM That's the US Railroad Retirement Board
authorCherri thank you...I had a brain freeze:-)
Ally Got to go now, thanks Cherri and ADM. :-)
authorCherri bye Ally
genealogyADM Thanks for coming Ally!
authorCherri Back to the U.S. Surname Distribution Map...has anyone here used it?
genealogyADM Cherri - with 7 million + genealogy pages on the Internet, you are allowed to have the occasional brain freeze!
............................ Ally left.............
authorCherri It's at www.primenet.com/~hamrick/names
genealogyADM Actually, Rootsweb has the most up-to-date SSDI records
genealogyADM and the most advanced search features to help you look through it
authorCherri great!
............................ April2 joined.............
authorCherri I am always amazed at what's out there. It never gets boring.
April2 Kim, I got the address just before I was disconnected - AGAIN. I'll have to see the transcript to see if I missed anything else about railroad info - thanks
genealogyADM You have more trouble with bouncing than anyone, April!
genealogyADM The Surname Distribution Map that Cherri mentioned can be a worthwhile tool
April2 Is it me or what? I never get disconnected when I'm searching the net
authorCherri About the Surname Distibution Map at www.primenet.com/~hamrick/names You can enter a surname, click on "All years" and see a particular surname's migration pattern through the years.
authorCherri I wanted to mention this before the chat was over.
April2 Is that the site that tells you where the people with the surnamae you are searching may be living
............................ rabbit joined.............
genealogyADM Hi Rabbit :-)
authorCherri It shows the distribution of a particular surname based on census records and phone book listings.
April2 Hi rabbit
authorCherri I love this little tool, because I've had more than one student put in a surname and find that the earliest records of their family show up in one state.
April2 Is this only for US sites?
authorCherri Then the researcher knows that they can go there and research that name.
authorCherri Yes
authorCherri Unfortunately
authorCherri However the census records go back to the early 1800's
authorCherri It's a great site.
............................ April left.............
authorCherri I had one lady who couldn't pinpoint where her family entered the country at. She typed in her surname and found the highest concentration were only in one state along the East coast. She searched ship records there and found them.
authorCherri I hope some of you will try this site. It's not only fun, but really useful in tracing migration patterns.
April2 I wish I could find the ship record I'm looking for - know the year, name of the ship and that he entered at St. John New Brunswick and then emmigrated to the US, but can't find documentation anywhere
genealogyADM April - have you looked for naturalization papers?
authorCherri Let me look for another Web address or two I have for ship lists. I'll be right back.
genealogyADM Have you tried Immigrant Ships Transcribers Guild?
April2 I didn't know you could search back in the 1830's- don't know if he was naturalized, because he ended back in Canada a few years later
April2 I tried the ISTG - no luck
genealogyADM May not have been then - and they didn't keep a lot of records in the 1830's - you are correct
genealogyADM How about Immigrants to Canada?
April2 It gets so frustrating not to be able to find the source - but keep trying. Sometimes go off on another branch for a while
authorCherri www.rootsweb.com/~ote (The Olive Tree Genealogy), www.cimorelli.com, and www.daddezio
April2 Where can I check immigrants to Canada - never thought about going backwards, but it makes sense in this case
genealogyADM http://www.ist.uwaterloo.ca/~marj/genealogy/thevoyage.html
authorCherri Try these sites for ship lists, although there are many other sites out there, these are abundant.
authorCherri tx
April2 Thanks Cherri
authorCherri genealogy ADM, how long does you chat usually run. I may need to wrap up soon.
authorCherri you're welcome
genealogyADM Usually just an hour - you are free to leave anytime!!!
genealogyADM I will stay longer to chat with anyone who still has questions
authorCherri Sure, but one last little shameless plug?
