Transcript of Chat from May 8, 2000

genealogyADM SInce most of you seem to have at least tried the Surname search on the home page (which searches Ancestral File and the IGI) I think I will start tonight's chat by introducing you to the "Custom Search" feature
Kak2 ok
genealogyADM Let me try something here
Bev ok
kermit.webpage.com [2009]  cruise http://www.familysearch.org
genealogyADM Did the FamilySearch site just come up on your computers?
April like magic
genealogyADM Yay - it worked :-)
Kak2 yes, but it's gone now
April Now it's gone
Kak2 now what?
hileman it's gone
tubanoiz Mine came up in a separate browser
genealogyADM Are you sure the window is gone and isn't just hiding under the browser window with the chat in it?
genealogyADM It should be in a separate window like tubanoiz said
April how do we know that
Kak2 the family search icon is on the bottom part of my computer
hileman in a separate window
genealogyADM Click on that Kak
genealogyADM You found it hileman?
tubanoiz If you bring up the start menu, your button bar will have the Family Search Internet web site there
hileman yes
genealogyADM Good
genealogyADM April - do you have it yet?
genealogyADM How about you Bev?
Kak2 i did and it came up, but when i started typing it went off
April , but everytime I say something, it disappears
Kak2 yeah
genealogyADM It will. Whichever browser you are using will be on top
Kak2 oh, now its behind the chat window
genealogyADM Just get comfortable with switching back and forth
Kak2 how?
genealogyADM It's a good thing to know how to do if you will be using the Internet a lot
Bev I had an error message that the site was busy
genealogyADM Just click on the icon at the bottom of your computer again, Kak
genealogyADM Hold on a sec Bev
Kak2 i did and it came up in front, but when i started typing it went off again
genealogyADM Kak - everytime you type it will go back to the back. That is OK
Kak2 how can i use it if it does that?
genealogyADM I just want to know that it is there so that I can tell you to go and try things
Kak2 ok, its here
genealogyADM Sorry if I am confusing you all ;-)
genealogyADM Bev - is your window working yet?
Bev no
Kak2 i've had my puter for 3 years and i'm just a begginer
genealogyADM Bring that window up to the top and type in http://www.familysearch.com
genealogyADM That's part of what I am trying to do...teach you a few Internet skills which will be very helpful for your genealogy research :-)
genealogyADM OK everyone - look at the FamilySearch screen and find the Custom Tab - click on it and then take a look at some of the things available on that page
Bev sorry what window? I am also new at this
genealogyADM Bev - the window which said it was busy
genealogyADM Do you see a refresh button?
Bev I don't think I am connected to family search
genealogyADM Bev - which browser do you use Internet Explorer or Netscape?
genealogyADM While Bev and I try to figure this out, I want the rest of you to go back to the Custom Search page which you opened and select Source Guide and then select Catalog Helper
Bev netscape
Kak2 ok, i did that
genealogyADM Bev - Click on the file menu up at the top and then click on New and then Navigator Window
genealogyADM April - let's look for one of your ancestors
April OK
genealogyADM Can you pick one and then tell me what location that they were in
genealogyADM Still with us genaddict and hileman?
April Robert Kean from Perth, Lanark Co. Ontario
hileman yes
genaddict I'm ok
genealogyADM Canada doesn't have as much info as the US, but let's try it!
April many of the records I've found have the spelling KANE
Kak2 this is really exciting
genealogyADM Everyone go to the Catalog Helper and select Canada
genealogyADM Bev - are you still there?
Kak2 ok
genaddict April - can you tell us which research goal you have for Robert Kean tonight?
Bev I'm back
genealogyADM Hi Bev
Kak2 stay with us Bev
April birth - can't find the date anywhere
genealogyADM Sorry you are having so many problems tonight :-)
Kak2 lousy spelling tonight
genealogyADM Birth date is a good thing to look for
Kak2 for me that is
genealogyADM Everyone go back to the Catalog Helper and select birth date
Bev How do I get connected to Family Search website
genealogyADM Look at all of the information which comes up
Bev ok
Kak2 did that
Kak2 wow, i'm impressed
Kak2 i never have used that before
April I've never been here before - this is great
Kak2 this is wonderful since Kim came along
Kak2 oh ok
genealogyADM Anyway, this Catalog Helper is one of my favorite tools on the FamilySearch site
Kak2 mine too now that i know how to use it
genealogyADM It gives you an idea of what records you should be searching for to find the information that you want
Kak2 right
genealogyADM And it will also find all of the appropriate Family History SourceGuides which are wonderful research outlines
Kak2 i love genealogy, i have always love digging up stuff
genealogyADM You can also find the entire list of available SourceGuide research outlines on the first page you were at after clicking on the Custom Search tab
April what do we do next - I'm so excited.
Kak2 me too April
genealogyADM There is a research outline for each of the 50 US states as well as the Canadian provinces
genealogyADM And several other countries
genealogyADM When you have some free time, you should DEFINITELY take the time to look at those research outlines
Bev I am still not connecting. I must have a problem I will sign off now thanks anyway
Kak2 bye Bev
genealogyADM Bev - I am saving this chat
genealogyADM So you can look at it on my Web site
April Bye
Kak2 come back Bev
genealogyADM I also put most of this info in my new article today
hileman we've all been there
Kak2 i'm usually the one with puter problems
genealogyADM We all have bad computer days - and this is pretty tricky for someone who hasn't done it before
genealogyADM Please feel free to stay and listen if you want to :-)
Bev Thanks
Kak2 please Bev?
genealogyADM OK now, back to the catalog helper
Bev ok
Kak2 then what Kim?
genealogyADM It suggested that we first look in Vital Records and Church records for April's ancestor
genealogyADM So now we go to the Family History Library Catalog and look to see if the Family History library has any of those
genealogyADM Where did you say that we were searching again April?
April Perth, Lanark co, Ont
genealogyADM OK
genealogyADM On the left hand side of your screen click on "search for ancestors"
genealogyADM This will take you back to the home page
genealogyADM Then click on the Custom Search tab again
genealogyADM And then click on Family History Library Catalog
genealogyADM This is basically the "Card Catalog" for the Family History Library in Salt Lake City UT and contains info on over 2 million records
Kak2 we're with you
hileman okay
Kak2 now what?
............................ Chatter joined.............
genealogyADM Now select place search and type in Lanark in the top box and then Ontario in the bottom box
Kak2 hi Chatter
genealogyADM Hi Chatter :-)
Chatter Hi Room!
genealogyADM It is a good idea to be as specific as possible in that top search box so that you don't end up with a million records to look at
Chatter What does it mean when you are doing the FamilySearch and the results say "All Sources"?
genealogyADM Just a sec, Chatter..
genealogyADM The bottom box is used to help limit your search as well
genealogyADM In this case it probably wasn't really necessary to put Ontario because there probably aren't a lot of Lanarks in the world
genealogyADM But say you were searching for Lexington Kentucky and had typed in Lexington in the top box
genealogyADM You would have also found results for Lexington PA, Lexington SC and so on
genealogyADM Make sense?
April No, but it's confusing because there is the town Lanark and then there is also a county called Lanark
Kak2 i'm kind of lost
genealogyADM Which one are you looking for?
genealogyADM the county right?
April Lanark County
April Yes
genealogyADM OK then lets try making the search even more specific
Kak2 i'm going to search on my own. see you guys later
............................ Kak2 left.............
genealogyADM Use the back button on your browser and then type in Perth (the town April is searching for) in the top box and type Lanark (the county Perth is a part of) in the bottom box
genealogyADM Chatter - back to your question now
genealogyADM When you use Ancestor Search and it says "All Sources" it means that the matches come from all of the sources
genealogyADM IGI, Ancestral File, Pedigree Resource File, and Web sites
Chatter How do you get to the sources?
genealogyADM If you click on a record from that list it will have a source number on it
Chatter There was no list.
genealogyADM Then you can click on the source number and it will tell you the microfilm number
genealogyADM Chatter - what did you type into the search box?
Chatter My info.
genealogyADM You may have searched for something so specific that it had no matches
Chatter I put my name in and parents name and spouse to see if it would show up my birth date.
genealogyADM Did you type info into all of the boxes? Or just the surname box
Chatter all
genealogyADM It won't show your birth date unless someone has a Web site with your birth date on it because FamilySearch does not include living people to protect their privacy
Chatter Oh What will it show?
genealogyADM Did everyone type in Perth into the library catalog?
genealogyADM Chatter - It won't have information about you at all
Chatter Only deceased people?
genealogyADM Chatter- yes, only deceased people...and only people that others have researched in the past and then contributed the info to the Church
genealogyADM Or on the Web site
Chatter Ok. thanks.
genealogyADM Did all of you find the results for Perth, Lanark, Ontario?
April yes
hileman yes
genealogyADM Good - look at the results list and then select vital records/newspapers - we will look there first
genealogyADM When was Robert born April...these results look like they may be too recent
April Somewhere in the mid 1800's. Maybe the newspaper account of his death in 1933 would give info
genealogyADM Select the first title in the list - this newspaper is indexed all the way back to 1834
............................ Chatter left.............
genealogyADM We will use it as an example
April the first on e looks the most promising
genealogyADM If you select "View Film Notes" it will give you information on the microfilms of this newspaper
April looks like this will be the next film I order
genealogyADM April - actually I would check the details first
genealogyADM It looks like most of those indexes are in book form - which you cannot request through your local FHC
genealogyADM It says the later ones are only on microfilm, but I can't really tell if the earlier ones are or not
April I found out that if the source is in a book, you can requests a microfilm be made of the book, I'm not sure what this cost, but I think I saw somewhere that it is $5
genealogyADM If you can't find the book elsewhere, you can actually request that they film it for you
April Do you know how much it is?
genealogyADM I'm not sure how much it costs...can't find it on their Web site
genealogyADM I would check with your local FHC
genealogyADM It can also take a while
April The staff at the center wasn't sure either
April They did tell me not to ask about the progress unless at least 3 months had lapsed
genealogyADM Sounds about right
............................ Bev left.............
genealogyADM Sometimes they have to ask for permission to film first when the work is copyrighted
genealogyADM Anyway, April just keep browsing through the records for Perth
genealogyADM If you don't find anything there then back your search up to the County Level
genealogyADM Hileman - do you have anyone you would like to search for?
April Thanks for the help.
genealogyADM Did this help any April?
hileman okay
hileman Benjamin hileman and Hannah Potts marriage in PA
April I can tell I'd like to call in sick so I can spend the day on the 'puter tomorrow!
genealogyADM Sounds like a plan April ;-)
genealogyADM Check out my article on the Family History Library Catalog for more info
genealogyADM http://genealogy.about.com/library/weekly/aa050700a.htm
genealogyADM And I would like to continue this chat next week to cover some more sections of the Web site
April Will you be doing more on the LDS site in the next chat? I'd like to learn more - on the IGI
genealogyADM Ok - lets look for Hileman ancestors :-)
genealogyADM Where in PA hileman? Do you know?
hileman Either Indiana Co or Jefferson Co
genealogyADM And what time period?
hileman abt 1870 I think
genaddict I want to do a new search here...just to introduce something else
genealogyADM That's a good idea
genealogyADM Everyone go back to the main page for the Family History Library Catalog
genealogyADM The easiest way is probably to click on Home and then "Custom Search" and then the catalog again
genealogyADM When you get there click on Surname Search
genealogyADM Everyone with me?
hileman yes
April yes
genealogyADM Type in Hileman and hit enter
genealogyADM This surname search in the Family History Library catalog searches for published family historys which have the surname as a keyword (meaning that surname is fairly prevalent in the book)
genealogyADM I see several Hileman histories from PA - do any of those look like they may be your family Hileman?
............................ April left.............
hileman lets try the one from York Co.
genealogyADM Select that title and then select "View Film Notes"
genealogyADM This is a book which has also been saved on microfiche..
hileman okay
genealogyADM So you could request the microfiche through your local Family History Center if you wanted to look at it
............................ April2 joined.............
April2 I'm back - lost the window, but will listen
kermit.webpage.com [2009]  cruise http://www.familysearch.org
genealogyADM Hileman - have you searched for your Hilemans in the Ancestor Search?
April2 got it back - thanks
hileman not for Benjamin
genealogyADM Why don't we try that then...unless you would rather do the place search?
hileman No, we can do anc. search
genealogyADM The place search would be exactly as we did it tonight for April's ancestors...except that I would recommend that you search on the county level (ie Indiana in the top box and Pennsylvania in the bottom box)
genealogyADM It's hard to search by place when you aren't sure which county though
hileman okay
genealogyADM Go to the FamilySearch home page and type Hileman in the surname box and Benjamin in the first name box
genealogyADM Leave the exact spelling box unchecked
genealogyADM That way it will search for variant spellings
genealogyADM Do any of these look like they may be yours?
hileman maybe no. 6
hileman no, wrong spouse
genealogyADM What was the spouses name again?
hileman hannah potts
hileman found a cousin in the list
hileman my benjamin doesn't seem to be there
April2 are these names extracted from the records that the LDS has collected or are they from family trees that have been submitted tothe LDS?K
genealogyADM These names come from both April
genealogyADM DO another search for me and I will explain the various sources
genealogyADM Type Hannah in the first name box, Potts in the surname box, and select United States and Pennsylvania as well
hileman just did Ben's father ,Jonas Hileman wrong Jonas
genealogyADM When the list of Hannah Potts comes up, look over on the right hand side of the screen and you will see a box which says "sources searched"
genealogyADM Those are the four sources which Ancestor Search looks through
genealogyADM Any of them listed with less than 25 matches are already in your results list
genealogyADM You will notice, however, that IGI/North America lists 25+
genealogyADM To see all of the results for that source you will have to select it from that box
genealogyADM Still with me?
hileman yes
April2 I did a couple of quick searches, but no sources were listed under the Sourcebox
............................ bettyb joined.............
genealogyADM The IGI and the Ancestral File both are records submitted by LDS church members
hileman what are you to do if you find and error in the files
genealogyADM The Pedigree Resource File is primarily information which has been submitted by users of the Web site
genealogyADM Are the errors in Ancestral File?
April2 Have to go. The transcript of your instructions would be helpful on your site. Thanks for the help tonight. Look forward to next week
genealogyADM Thanks for coming April
genealogyADM I will definitely put the transcript up on my site
genealogyADM Also be sure to check out both of my Family search articles
genealogyADM They cover all of what we talked about here tonight
hileman yes, but can't think right now where it is and would have to look in files
genealogyADM And I will continue this how to chat next week
genealogyADM Hileman - here is the info on their Web site on how to correct info in Ancestral File:
April2 I was hoping Daisy would be here tonight so I could congratulate her on her winning the book. The guest had some helpful hints
genealogyADM http://www.familysearch.org/sg/default.asp?goto_page=AFCORR.html
genealogyADM She hasn't been in touch with me yet so that I can send her the book!
hileman thanks---I will send corrections to them
genealogyADM Hileman - there are a lot of errors in Ancestral File
genealogyADM But it is still a good place to go for research ideas
............................ April2 left.............
hileman also in some books i've seen
genealogyADM You can take the information you find and use it as clues in your own research
