Definition:
Also known as the French Revolutionary calendar,
the French Revolutionary Calendar was officially adopted in France on October
24, 1793 and abolished on 1 January 1806 by Emperor Napoleon I. It was used
again briefly during under the Paris Commune in 1871. It is of importance to
genealogists because documents which were created during the time this calendar
was in effect include different names for months, a different start of the year
and a different beginning of each month. Conversion tools make it easy to
convert dates from this calendar to the Gregorian calendar.Pronunciation:
[french ri-puhb-li-kuhn
kal-uhn-dur]
