Correct!

The Metis (mixed blood) were generally the offspring of European men (often fur traders) and Aboriginal women. Because they had ties to both First Nations and the European & Canadian communities, many people of mixed ancestry wanted an alternative to taking treaty. The Government of Canada offered scrip (a promise of land or money to purchase land) instead of a treaty to anyone who claimed a mixed European and Aboriginal background. Scrip Commissions were established to arrange for the issuing of these certificates.
