| Google's Image Search Feature | ||||||||||
This week Google added yet one more wonderful tool to its advanced search features. Image Search is still in beta (meaning that it is still being tested and may still have kinks to be worked out), but is already the most comprehensive on the Web, with more than 150 million images indexed and available for viewing. You can access this feature by going to the Google home page at www.google.com and then clicking on 'advanced search.' This type of search can have all sorts of implications for genealogists. You can use it to search across the Web for images of cemeteries or tombstones. For example, last week I was searching for photos of 'Boot Hill Cemetery' in Arizona for another project and it took me quite a while. Today I went to Google's image search and typed in 'boot hill cemetery' and several photos popped right up :) This type of search can also be used to find photos of ancestors, places, historic events, etc. to help add a touch of history to our family histories. Two caveats: 1) many of these images may be copyrighted, so be sure to read the fine print and contact the owner for permission before downloading them and 2) this is a brand-new feature and many Internet photos have not yet been indexed. Happy hunting! For further research: Genealogy Links - Photos & Memories
